Blaz Kutin
Script-writer/ Director
Blaz Kutin was born on the 14th of July 1970 in Ljubljana. He graduated in Ethnology with Cultural Anthropology and Sociology of Culture from the University of Ljubljana, with theses entitled Woody Allen?s Urban Cosmos and The Balkan Mentality in Emir Kusturica?s Films. During his studies he worked as writer and director of radio commercials at Radio Glas Ljubljana (Radio Voice of Ljubljana), was Permanent Collaborator at Radio Student Ljubljana, and wrote regularly or periodically for daily newspaper Dnevnik, political magazine Mladina, and film magazine Ekran. In 1995 he published his book The Land of White Doves from his journals of one of his travels to Bosnia in the years 1993/4. Currently he works as a translator for TV Slovenia.
In 1998 he attended the three-months long Film Seminar at ZKOS (Association of Slovene Cultural Organizations) in Ljubljana. In 2001 he attended the screenwriting workshop Pokaži jezik (Show Your Tongue) in Ljubljana, and in the years 2002/3 he attended the MFI Scriptworkshops in Greece.
He was Assistant Director on feature films Oda Prešernu (Ode to the Poet), directed by Martin Srebotnjak, and Nemir (Unrest), directed by Andrej Žumbergar.
In 2002, his screenplay for the feature film Gravity was the first Slovene project selected to the European PitchPoint in Berlin. Gravity was also one of the 8 projects selected for the CineLink workshops and film market during the Sarajevo Film Festival in 2004, and National Winner of the Hartley-Merrill Screenwriting Award.
He also wrote the screenplays for a one-hour feature film Paper Sky, and for short feature films Princess, Melancholy, and My Dear Beloved Sanya.
The shooting of Princess, Kutin?s directorial debut, is scheduled for spring 2005 as a Croatian-Slovene coproduction.
